Credit Cards

Credit cards are fast becoming the top way consumers purchase goods. They are a handy and versatile way to purchase goods and services without having to carry around cash. Every year, billions of dollars in services and goods are purchased using the convenient plastic cards. Online purchases are also increasing and some cards are international and able to be used overseas.

The basic way credit cards operate is that of an arrangement between a creditor, or credit provider, and a debtor. The debtor, or cardholder, is approved for a pre-established limit and is then able to purchase goods with the card. The cardholder is responsible for all of the legal transactions of the credit card and must pay back the principle amount of credit used for the purchases as well as the interest according to the rate agreed upon by the two parties.

Credit cards are also a major reason why many people today experience some kind of debt. With high interest rates, processing fees, and hidden costs, credit cards oftentimes burden the user who cannot pay all of his or her bills in a timely manner. The stress of not being able to pay credit bills on time can lead to even more sloppy credit and spending habits. Some people have no resort but to pay one credit card bill with another credit card.

An estimated 5.3 billion offers for credit cards are mailed to consumers every year. Credit cards are also heavily marketed to college and university students. Students comprise a major marketing group creditor’s target. Most students do not work full-time and with a test every other week paying credit card bills are the least of their worries. The burden of paying the bills typically falls on the shoulders of the parents, who are already burdened with their own bills and payments.

Recent spending trends suggest that Americans are seeking help with credit debt. An estimated 2.5 million Americans have sought out some sort of credit counseling to help them regulate and control their debt. Debt consolidation and debt negotiations are other helpful methods people experiencing financial troubles should look into.
